Did you know the crocodile bird flies into the open mouth of a crocodile and cleans its teeth for it?
Did you know 45-70 seconds is the amount of time most people brush their teeth per day?
Sleep apnea is the intermittent stopping of breathing while asleep. Reggie White was a fixture of strength for the Green Bay Packers denfensive line. He couldn’t be stopped on his way to the quarterback, but sleep apnea took his life and stopped him in Dec. of 2004 at the age of 43.
For some people, this was the first exposure to the common problem affecting many children and adults. Children who have stoppage of breathing is usually due to obstructive sleep apnea, in which the tonsils are swollen and block the airway during sleep. Adults who have extreme snoring are sometimes shown to suffer from sleep apnea, which can lead to physical ailments, such as daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure and other health concerns. Sleep studies are often used to diagnose this disorder and treatments range from CPAP machines that force air into the airway to surgeries to open the airway (tonsil removal), to oral devices that can be prescribed by our office to the open the airway during sleep.
Call our office today to get help for you, or a loved one, with the problem of snoring and/or sleep apnea.

DID you know an elephant grinds down its molars and grows new ones?
Did you know the dolphin only gets one set of teeth to last a lifetime?
While an elephant can grind down its teeth and then grow new ones, we are not allowed that luxury. It is known that 20% of the population grinds their teeth during the day and 8% of the population grind their teeth at night. The detrimental night activity is called ‘nocturnal bruxism’. Most people without a grinding problem will grind approximately .3mm of enamel every 10 years, while an extreme bruxer can loose approx. 2mm of enamel by their twenties. Grinding is commonly related to anxiety/stress that affects our nighttime sleeping patterns. 90% of bruxing (grinding) incidents occur in light sleep vs. deep sleep.
The two common findings during grinding deals often with breathing disorders (ie. sleep apnea and/or snoring) in which this disorder partially awakens us causing episodes of grinding. This grinding can cause extreme damage to our teeth, including loss of enamel, gum recession, loose teeth, chips and cracks in the teeth that lead to sensitivity of the teeth, root canals and potential loss of teeth. These grinding episodes can also cause physical problems including headaches, migraines, jaw pain, clicking & popping of the jaw, ringing of the ears, and locking of the lower jaw when opening or closing. There is, however, treatment for night time grinding including snore appliances and night guards that keep teeth from damaging each other.
We can help at Prosper Dentistry and Orthodontics, call today for an evaluation if you have concerns related to night time grinding.

Did you know that 90% of systemic diseases have oral manifestations?
Did you know tooth decay is the 2nd most common disease behind the common cold?
Did you know that regular dental cleanings can help prevent heart attacks?
Taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is a worthy goal in and of itself. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth as you get older.
Researchers are also discovering new reasons to brush and floss. A healthy mouth may help you ward off medical disorders. The flip side? An unhealthy mouth, especially if you have gum disease, may increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, poorly controlled diabetes and preterm labor.
The case for good oral hygiene keeps getting stronger. Understand the importance of oral health — and its connection to your overall health.
What does the health of your mouth have to do with your overall health? In a word, plenty. A look inside or a swab of saliva can tell your doctor volumes about what's going on inside your body.
Your mouth is an infection source!
If you don't brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth clean, plaque can build up along your gum line, creating an environment for additional bacteria to accumulate in the space between your gums and your teeth. This gum infection is known as gingivitis. Left unchecked, gingivitis can lead to a more serious gum infection called periodontitis. The most severe form of gum infection is called acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, also known as trench mouth.
A compelling case for good habits!
If you didn't already have enough reasons to take good care of your mouth, teeth and gums, the relationship between your oral health and your overall health provides even more. Resolve to practice good oral hygiene every day. You're making an investment in your overall health, not just for now, but for the future, too.
